HORNKLOFI did not go direct to Ringariki, as he had at first intended. When he came down to the mouth of Numdal, and reached the fork of the roads, one of which leads north into Sigurd's realm, the other south into Westfold, it entered his mind that he would go direct to Ravenness and Tunsberg, and find out for himself whether Gandalf and Haki had indeed invaded the land, as they might be expected to do.

He tried to put this thought from him; but in spite of his sober judgment, his love of adventure, spurred by the Celtic boyishness in him, drove him on. To quiet the protests of his better sense, he decided to leave it to the decision of chance, or Fate and cutting two crosses at about a hand’s-breath distance from each other in the bark of a pine, he called one “Westfold" and the other “Ringariki.”

Then he stepped off five paces, and hurled the knife at the tree-trunk. It stuck quivering in the wood; and when he looked to see which cross was closest to the blade, it was the one which stood for Westfold. So he sheathed the knife, drew his hood closer about his face, and trudged south.

About twilight, just north of Ravenness, and still five miles north of the royal hall at Tunsberg, he stopped in mid-stride, listening intently. He felt sure he heard the distant hoof-beats of a horse; but the sound stopped soon, and he heard it no more, He shrugged his shoulders, wrapped bis cloak tighter—for it was cold—and walked on. It was quite dark when he saw the lighted windows of the hall ahead, and heard the sounds of men reveling.
